Is the BackPack Weekend Food Program tax exempt?  


How is the BackPack Weekend Food Program funded?

 Each school is partnered with a local church or community organization that has agreed to fund a certain number of students in the program for at least one year.  The BWFP buys the food wholesale through a bulk food purchasing source, in turn the partner purchases the food from the BWFP.

How is the BackPack Weekend Food Program evaluated?

 Cooperation between the BWFP partners, schools, students and their families is necessary for the success of the program.  At the end of the school year each partner, school, and student’s family receive a survey to evaluate the program.  

How does the BackPack Weekend Food Program provide for extra students?

When schools have requests for additional students throughout the year the BWFP is able to provide for these students through the general fund.  Many of these students are identified as homeless.

Students are eligible for free lunch.

Gaston County residents are estimated to be in poverty.


The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 44% of households in Gaston County have an income of $35,000 or less.
